Built in 1930, the property sits along a low-rise residential block with a traditional sidewalk frontage shared with neighboring homes.

Years of age-related wear had taken a toll on the concrete, and weed growth through cracked and deteriorated sections had made the problem worse. Rather than replace the sidewalk alone, the scope was expanded to cover the full street-facing concrete: sidewalk, driveway apron, driveway, and curb cut, restoring the entire approach from the roadway to the garage in one coordinated project.

The Problem

The concrete along this Cambria Heights property had been breaking down gradually since it was first installed decades earlier. Weeds had rooted into cracked and weakened sections of the sidewalk and driveway, and as they spread, they widened the existing damage and accelerated the deterioration.

The driveway apron and curb cut were showing similar wear, which meant the issue wasn't limited to the pedestrian sidewalk. Vehicles moving from the street into the driveway were crossing the same aged, weed-affected concrete, adding day-to-day stress to an already compromised surface.

Because the sidewalk, apron, and driveway all fed into one continuous approach, a partial fix wouldn't have addressed the underlying problem. The property needed a single, coordinated replacement covering the full frontage.

Our Approach

Site Assessment and Permit Coordination

The team assessed the full scope of the damage across the sidewalk, driveway, apron, and curb area before any work began. Because the project touched both DOT and DOB jurisdiction, FY Sidewalk secured a NYC DOT Sidewalk Repair Permit, a Sidewalk Closing Permit, DOT curb-cut approval, and NYC DOB approval for the driveway work ahead of demolition.

Removal of Deteriorated Concrete

With permits in place, the crew removed the deteriorated sidewalk, driveway, and apron sections, clearing out the weed-affected material along with the surrounding concrete that had weakened as a result.

Base Preparation and Grading

The underlying base was prepared and graded to support both pedestrian and vehicle loads, setting up a stable foundation for the new sidewalk, apron, and driveway sections alike.

Curb Cut and Driveway Apron Installation

A new curb opening was incorporated to create a smooth transition from the roadway into the driveway. The driveway apron was poured to connect that curb cut to the driveway itself, closing the gap between the street and the property.

Concrete Installation and Finishing

New concrete was installed across all 12 affected slabs, covering the sidewalk, apron, and driveway as a single continuous surface. Control joints and a textured finish were added throughout, giving the concrete a durable, slip-resistant surface built to handle both foot traffic and vehicle use.

Site Cleanup

Once the new concrete had cured, the crew cleared the site of debris and excess material, leaving the finished sidewalk, apron, and driveway ready for use.

Why a Coordinated Approach Mattered

Sidewalk, apron, and driveway work can each fall under different permitting requirements, and treating them as separate projects often leads to mismatched grading or an uneven transition between sections.

By handling the sidewalk, curb cut, apron, and driveway together, FY Sidewalk was able to grade and pour the entire approach as one continuous surface, so the transition from street to garage reads as a single, deliberate installation rather than a series of patched-together repairs.

The Outcome

FY Sidewalk restored the property's full street-facing concrete, replacing approximately 12 slabs across the sidewalk, driveway apron, and driveway. The weed-damaged and age-worn sections were fully removed and rebuilt as part of the project.

The result is a continuous, textured concrete surface running from the curb cut through the driveway apron and driveway, with the adjoining pedestrian sidewalk restored to match. All required DOT and DOB permitting was secured and closed out as part of the scope.

Words of the Owner

“Our driveway and sidewalk were both original to the house, so everything was cracked, and weeds were coming up everywhere you looked. FY Sidewalk handled every permit, from DOT to the DOB approval for the driveway, and now the whole approach from the street to the garage looks brand new.”
